Gelada monkey

I have spent ten days observing and photographing Gelada monkeys in their natural habitat of
high elevation Simien Mountains National Park, Northern Ethiopia.
There is nothing like the view of this stunning primate, locally called, the “bleeding-heart
monkey" due to a bright red, hairless, hourglass-shaped patch of skin on its chest – sitting on
the edge of the mountain cliff at sunset.
These Old World, predominantly terrestrial primates, are very active during the day, mostly busy
foraging. They are unique, grass-grazing primates found only in the higher elevations of Ethiopia.
They spend the nights on the rock cliffs, so at the end of the day they usually gather on the
mountain cliffs for relatively sedentary social activities. They are highly gregarious primates.
In this sunset image, a pair of Geladas are gently grooming each other to build a relationship and
maintain hygiene. They look like the perfect pair, supporting each other and enjoying time
together.
Watching them on the mountain cliff with a spectacular sunset landscape of Simien National
Park, was a serene and reflective experience for me.
